Five Things That Make Life Easier for New Parents

In my work as a postpartum doula, I have seen dozens of baby care set-ups. Anyone taking care of a baby knows how many hours each day are spent on feedings and diaper changes, and sometimes little things can make these tasks feel much easier. Here are five of my favorite things to find in clients’ homes:

  1. Hand sanitizer. The most basic item on my list, I often find a bottle of hand sanitizer on the changing table. Sometimes it can be tough to step away long enough to wash my hands after a diaper change, so this is always appreciated.
  2. Shusher. Making loud “shushing” sounds to soothe a fussy baby is second nature to me now, but it can get old pretty quickly. This little orange and white machine saves my voice while providing the same sometimes miraculously calming sound.
  3. Hair drier. If your little one suffers from diaper rash, you probably know the importance of keeping their bottom dry. Diaper-free time, diaper cream, and patting dry are all helpful, but a hair drier on the cool setting is a quick and easy way of drying off that little tush during diaper changes.
  4. Magnetic sleepers. My favorite diaper change game-changer, outfits with magnetic closures are easier than snaps, less bulky than zippers, and not noisy like velcro. Considering how many times a baby gets changed every day, this lightning-fast option could save you hours by the time they are a toddler.
  5. Tiny fridge. My final tip is most helpful for babies who will be spending a lot of time in a part of their home that is not convenient to the kitchen, or parents who plan to pump overnight. A good cooler or tiny fridge can save countless trips up and down stairs during the night, saving you precious minutes of sleep.
