From Overwhelm to Empowerment: Rethinking Self-Care for Moms

Hi, I’m Heather! If we haven’t met yet, let me introduce myself. I’m a mom of three, married to a high school English teacher, and I’ve been working as a postpartum doula since 2010. I currently offer daytime and overnight support to new parents in the Boston/North Shore area, but my vision extends far beyond in-person care. I’m on a mission to help moms everywhere shift the culture of motherhood by rethinking what self-care really means. In a world where “self-care” often gets reduced to expensive activities to squeeze into our already packed schedules, I believe it’s time to take a different approach:

sustainable self- care.

What exactly makes self-care sustainable, and why does it matter? Much like how small, consistent healthy habits are better for our bodies than extreme diets, sustainable self-care is about making those small but meaningful choices that nourish us over time. It’s about noticing the patterns of thought and behavior that keep us from living the way we want to live, and making other choices. True self-care isn’t about adding more to our already full plates—it’s about finding creative ways to meet our own needs, honor our experiences, and bring more joy and fulfillment into our lives.

One of the biggest challenges I see moms facing is the idea that self-care has to look a certain way—expensive, time-consuming, or luxurious. This turns toxic when we can’t manage to achieve these expectations and end up feeling even worse about ourselves or our circumstances. In contrast, real, sustainable self-care is about acknowledging your own worth as a human being, making space for connection and healing right where you are, and offering yourself kindness, even when you feel like you’ve fallen short.

Over the past 16 years, I’ve been on my own journey toward understanding and embracing this concept, and I want to invite all moms, no matter where they are on their motherhood journey, to explore sustainable self-care with me. Together, we can build a community that supports each other in making choices that refresh and uplift us rather than leaving us feeling drained or straining our already limited resources.
